A66 Compact Crane (Novice)
Course Overview
The CPCS A66 Compact Crane Course is an intensive 4-day training programme designed to develop competent Compact Crane Operators responsible for the safe setup, operation and movement of loads using compact cranes. Recognised throughout the construction, infrastructure, industrial, manufacturing, glazing, modular construction and renewable energy sectors, the qualification develops the knowledge, practical understanding and operating skills required to safely undertake lifting operations in environments where access, space and operational constraints may restrict the use of larger crane types.
The course provides candidates with the knowledge required to safely operate compact cranes, carry out pre-use inspections, understand crane limitations, interpret load charts, assess lifting operations and safely manoeuvre loads in accordance with current legislation, industry standards and recognised best practice.
All training is delivered by experienced industry professionals with extensive compact crane operating experience and current operational knowledge.
The CPCS A66 Compact Crane (Novice) Course is aimed at individuals looking to develop the skills and knowledge required to safely operate compact cranes within construction, industrial and specialist lifting environments.
The course is particularly suitable for Slinger Signallers, Plant Operators, Construction Operatives, Glazing Operatives, Mechanical Installation Personnel, Modular Construction Teams, Engineering Personnel and individuals involved in lifting operations who are looking to progress into compact crane operating roles.
It is also suitable for personnel involved in contract lifting, heavy lifting operations, confined access lifting, infrastructure projects, offshore and onshore renewable energy projects, industrial installations, manufacturing facilities and complex lifting operations who require a recognised qualification and a greater understanding of compact crane operations.
Whilst previous compact crane operating experience is not essential, candidates should have a basic understanding of construction, industrial or lifting environments and be capable of learning both practical and theoretical aspects of crane operations.
The CPCS A66 Compact Crane qualification is designed to develop the knowledge and practical understanding required to safely operate compact cranes in accordance with current legislation, industry standards and recognised best practice.
Throughout the course, candidates will develop an understanding of the legal duties and responsibilities of the Compact Crane Operator, including compliance with LOLER, BS7121 and safe systems of work. The course covers crane terminology, crane components, pre-use inspections, crane setup procedures, stabiliser deployment, load charts, lifting operations, communication systems and emergency procedures.
Candidates will also gain knowledge of crane stability, ground conditions, confined space considerations, load characteristics, environmental influences, hazard identification and the factors that influence safe crane operation. Practical exercises and realistic lifting scenarios are used throughout the programme to develop the operating skills and decision-making abilities required when undertaking routine, complex, heavy lift and contract lifting operations.
Successful completion of the three-day training programme prepares candidates for the CPCS A66 Technical Test on day four.
Upon successful completion of the CPCS A66 Technical Test, candidates will achieve the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card for Compact Crane. This demonstrates that the holder has successfully completed recognised training and testing and possesses the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate a compact crane within lifting operations.
The CPCS Red Trained Operator Card is valid for two years and provides a recognised route towards achieving the CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card. To progress to the Blue Card, candidates must complete the relevant NVQ Level 2 in Plant Operations – Compact Crane and meet the CPCS card scheme requirements applicable at the time of application.
The Compact Crane qualification is recognised throughout the construction, infrastructure, industrial, manufacturing, glazing, modular construction and renewable energy sectors and supports progression into advanced crane categories, supervisory positions and specialist lifting roles.
CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test for Operatives (HS&E Operatives) – Candidates must hold a valid test pass completed within the previous two years. You can book the required test here. For further information see our Training Resources page.
