A61 Appointed Person (Experienced Worker / Practical Retest)
Course Overview
The CPCS A61 Appointed Person Course is an intensive 3-day training programme designed for experienced lifting professionals who require further preparation prior to undertaking the CPCS A61 Technical Test or Practical Retest. Recognised throughout the construction, infrastructure, industrial, manufacturing and renewable energy sectors, the Appointed Person qualification develops the knowledge, practical understanding and decision-making skills required to undertake one of the most responsible roles within a lifting operation.
This programme is intended for candidates with existing lifting operations experience who already possess a good understanding of crane operations, lifting equipment and safe systems of work but require additional training, consolidation or reassessment prior to certification.
All training is delivered by experienced industry professionals with extensive Appointed Person experience and current operational knowledge.
The CPCS A61 Appointed Person (Experienced Worker / Practical Retest) Course is aimed at experienced lifting professionals looking to progress into planning and management roles within lifting operations. The course is particularly suitable for Crane Supervisors, Crane/Lifting Operations Supervisors, Crane Operators, Slinger Signallers, Site Managers, Project Managers, Lifting Engineers and individuals responsible for the planning and coordination of lifting activities.
It is also suitable for personnel involved in lift planning, crane lift planning, contract lifting, heavy lifting operations, infrastructure projects, offshore and onshore renewable energy projects, industrial installations and complex lifting operations who require a recognised qualification and a greater understanding of their legal responsibilities under LOLER and BS7121.
Candidates should have previous experience of lifting operations and be able to demonstrate a good understanding of crane operations, lifting equipment, lifting terminology and safe systems of work.
The CPCS A61 Appointed Person qualification is designed to develop the knowledge and practical understanding required to safely plan, manage and control lifting operations in accordance with current legislation, industry standards and recognised best practice.
Throughout the course, candidates will develop an understanding of the legal duties and responsibilities of the Appointed Person, including compliance with LOLER, BS7121 and safe systems of work. The course covers the principles of lift planning, risk assessment, method statements, crane selection, lifting equipment selection, ground assessment and the management of lifting teams.
Candidates will also gain knowledge of crane capabilities, duty charts, lifting accessory ratings, rigging calculations, communication systems, personnel responsibilities and the factors that influence the safe execution of lifting operations. Practical exercises and realistic scenarios are used throughout the programme to develop the decision-making skills required when planning routine, complex, heavy lift and contract lifting operations.
Successful completion of the two-day training programme prepares candidates for the CPCS A61 Technical Test or Practical Retest on day three.
Upon successful completion of the CPCS A61 Technical Test, candidates will achieve the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card for Appointed Person. This demonstrates that the holder has successfully completed recognised training and testing and possesses the knowledge required to undertake the duties and responsibilities of an Appointed Person within lifting operations.
