Course Overview
The Appointed Person Course is an intensive 5-day training programme designed to develop competent Appointed Persons responsible for the safe planning, management and control of lifting operations.
Recognised throughout the construction, infrastructure, industrial, manufacturing, ports and renewable energy sectors, the programme develops the knowledge, practical understanding and decision-making skills required to undertake one of the most responsible roles within a lifting operation.
Delivered by experienced industry professionals with extensive operational Appointed Person experience, the course combines classroom learning, practical exercises and realistic planning scenarios to prepare candidates for the responsibilities associated with planning and controlling lifting operations in accordance with current legislation, industry standards and recognised best practice.
The programme is designed to help organisations develop competent personnel capable of planning and managing lifting operations safely, efficiently and in accordance with industry best practice.
The Appointed Person Course is designed to develop the knowledge and practical understanding required to safely plan, manage and control lifting operations in accordance with current legislation, industry standards and recognised best practice.
Throughout the programme, candidates will develop an understanding of:
- Legal duties and responsibilities of an Appointed Person
- LOLER and BS7121 requirements
- Safe systems of work
- Lift planning principles
- Risk assessment and method statements
- Crane and lifting equipment selection
- Ground assessment considerations
- Management of lifting teams
- Crane capabilities and duty charts
- Lifting accessory ratings
- Rigging calculations
- Communication systems
- Roles and responsibilities within lifting operations
Practical exercises and realistic planning scenarios are used throughout the programme to develop the decision-making skills required when planning routine, complex, heavy lift and contract lifting operations.
The course includes both theoretical and practical assessments designed to evaluate the candidate’s understanding and application of Appointed Person responsibilities.
Upon successful completion of the course and associated assessments, candidates will be awarded a RELO Training Appointed Person Certificate.
The certificate demonstrates that the holder has successfully completed training and assessment aligned with recognised industry standards and best practice for the planning, management and control of lifting operations.
The RELO Training Appointed Person Certificate is valid for three years and provides employers with confidence that the holder has demonstrated the knowledge and practical understanding required to undertake the responsibilities of an Appointed Person.
To maintain competence and remain current with industry legislation, standards and best practice, candidates should attend the Appointed Person Refresher Course before certificate expiry. The refresher programme is delivered over two days and focuses on legislative updates, industry developments and the continued application of Appointed Person responsibilities within lifting operations.
