A64 Overhead Travelling Crane (Novice)
Course Overview
The CPCS A64 Overhead Travelling Crane Course is an intensive 3-day training programme designed to develop competent Overhead Travelling Crane Operators responsible for the safe operation, control and movement of loads using an overhead travelling crane. Recognised throughout the construction, infrastructure, industrial, manufacturing, engineering, logistics, ports and renewable energy sectors, the qualification develops the knowledge, practical understanding and operating skills required to safely undertake lifting operations in workplace environments where overhead travelling cranes are used.
This course is delivered at the customer's premises using their own overhead travelling crane, lifting accessories and working environment, allowing candidates to develop practical skills on familiar equipment while working towards a nationally recognised CPCS qualification.
All training is delivered by experienced industry professionals with extensive lifting operations and crane operating experience. Contact RELO Training for pricing and availability.
The CPCS A64 Overhead Travelling Crane Course is aimed at individuals who are required to operate an overhead travelling crane within a construction, industrial, manufacturing, engineering, warehousing, logistics, port or production environment.
The course is particularly suitable for production operatives, engineering personnel, maintenance staff, warehouse operatives, lifting operatives, plant operators and individuals involved in the movement, positioning or handling of loads using overhead travelling cranes.
It is also suitable for personnel involved in industrial lifting operations, fabrication facilities, manufacturing plants, workshops, logistics operations, ports, renewables, heavy engineering and specialist lifting activities who require a recognised qualification and a greater understanding of overhead travelling crane operations.
Candidates do not need previous CPCS certification, however they should be capable of working safely within their workplace environment and following site procedures, lifting instructions and safe systems of work.
The CPCS A64 Overhead Travelling Crane qualification is designed to develop the knowledge and practical understanding required to safely operate an overhead travelling crane in accordance with current legislation, industry standards and recognised best practice.
Throughout the course, candidates will develop an understanding of the legal duties and responsibilities of the Overhead Travelling Crane Operator, including compliance with LOLER, BS7121 and safe systems of work. The course covers crane terminology, crane controls, pre-use checks, lifting accessory awareness, load assessment, safe travelling of loads, communication methods, exclusion zones, emergency procedures and the factors that influence safe crane operation.
Candidates will also gain knowledge of load stability, centre of gravity, lifting points, environmental and workplace hazards, personnel responsibilities, operational limitations, signalling methods and the importance of effective communication during lifting operations. Practical exercises and realistic workplace scenarios are used throughout the programme to develop the operating skills and decision-making abilities required when undertaking routine overhead travelling crane operations.
Successful completion of the two-day training programme prepares candidates for the CPCS A64 Technical Test on day three.
Upon successful completion of the CPCS A64 Technical Test, candidates will achieve the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card for Overhead Travelling Crane. This demonstrates that the holder has successfully completed recognised training and testing and possesses the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate an overhead travelling crane within lifting operations.
The CPCS Red Trained Operator Card is valid for two years and provides a recognised route towards achieving the CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card. To progress to the Blue Card, candidates must complete the relevant NVQ Level 2 in Plant Operations – Overhead Travelling Crane and meet the CPCS card scheme requirements applicable at the time of application.
The Overhead Travelling Crane qualification is recognised throughout the construction, infrastructure, industrial, manufacturing, engineering, logistics, ports and renewable energy sectors and supports progression into wider lifting operations, plant operations, supervisory roles and specialist lifting activities.
CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test for Operatives (HS&E Operatives) – Candidates must hold a valid test pass completed within the previous two years. You can book the required test here. For further information see our Training Resources page.
