A40 Slinger/Signaller (Novice)
Course Overview
The CPCS A40 Slinger/Signaller Course is an intensive 3-day training programme designed to develop competent Slinger/Signallers responsible for the safe slinging, signalling and movement of loads during lifting operations. Recognised throughout the construction, infrastructure, industrial, manufacturing, ports and renewable energy sectors, the qualification develops the knowledge, practical understanding and communication skills required to undertake one of the most important roles within a lifting team.
The course provides candidates with the knowledge required to safely attach and detach loads, select appropriate lifting accessories, direct crane movements using recognised hand and radio signals, and ensure lifting operations are carried out safely and efficiently in accordance with current legislation, industry standards and recognised best practice.
All training is delivered by experienced industry professionals with extensive lifting operations experience and current operational knowledge.
The CPCS A40 Slinger/Signaller Course is aimed at individuals involved in lifting operations who are responsible for attaching loads, directing crane movements and assisting with the safe movement of loads on site. The course is particularly suitable for construction operatives, crane support personnel, banksmen, riggers, lifting operatives, plant operatives and individuals looking to begin a career within the lifting industry.
It is also suitable for personnel involved in contract lifting, heavy lifting operations, infrastructure projects, offshore and onshore renewable energy projects, industrial installations, ports, logistics operations and complex lifting activities who require a recognised qualification and a greater understanding of their legal responsibilities under LOLER and BS7121.
No previous CPCS qualification is required, however candidates should be capable of working safely within lifting operations and following site procedures and instructions.
The CPCS A40 Slinger/Signaller qualification is designed to develop the knowledge and practical understanding required to safely sling loads, select lifting accessories and communicate effectively during lifting operations in accordance with current legislation, industry standards and recognised best practice.
Throughout the course, candidates will develop an understanding of the legal duties and responsibilities of the Slinger/Signaller, including compliance with LOLER, BS7121 and safe systems of work. The course covers the principles of slinging loads, lifting accessory inspection, lifting accessory selection, load assessment, communication methods, hand signalling, radio communication, exclusion zones and hazard identification.
Candidates will also gain knowledge of lifting equipment limitations, load stability, centre of gravity, environmental considerations, personnel responsibilities and the factors that influence the safe execution of lifting operations. Practical exercises and realistic scenarios are used throughout the programme to develop the practical skills and decision-making abilities required when undertaking routine, complex, heavy lift and contract lifting operations.
Successful completion of the two-day training programme prepares candidates for the CPCS A40 Technical Test on day three.
Upon successful completion of the CPCS A40 Technical Test, candidates will achieve the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card for Slinger/Signaller. This demonstrates that the holder has successfully completed recognised training and testing and possesses the knowledge required to safely undertake the duties and responsibilities of a Slinger/Signaller within lifting operations.
The CPCS Red Trained Operator Card is valid for two years and provides a recognised route towards achieving the CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card. To progress to the Blue Card, candidates must complete the relevant NVQ Level 2 in Plant Operations – Slinger/Signaller and meet the CPCS card scheme requirements applicable at the time of application.
The Slinger/Signaller qualification is recognised throughout the construction, infrastructure, industrial, manufacturing, ports and renewable energy sectors and supports progression into Crane/Lifting Operations Supervisor, Appointed Person and specialist lifting roles.
CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test for Operatives (HS&E Operatives) – Candidates must hold a valid test pass completed within the previous two years. You can book the required test here. For further information see our Training Resources page.
